Research, not a list of ideas

It builds the thesis with me, not for me. I bring a hunch; it pulls the thread — what breaks this, what's the second-order move, where does this rhyme with something we've already worked through. It doesn't hand me a stock. It hands me a sharper version of my own question. Four months in, and it already argues with me.

The mirror that won't smooth me out

It holds my discipline against my own impulse. The hardest thing it does is tell me no — in my own voice. When I want to add to a position my own rules say leave alone, it's the one that remembers the rule and says so. It can't forbid anything. It just won't let me pretend I didn't know better.
